Professor Dr. med, Dr. h.c. Hans- Georg Knoch in memoriam
President of the "Ärztliche Gesellschaft für Ozonanwendung in Prävention and Therapie" /Society for the Use of Ozone in Preventive and Therapy
Without Kristin, his wife, we are hardly able to remember him. At congresses and lectures, board meetings and general functions, she was with him on his travels throughout all these years, caring for his wellbeing, until she succumbed to cancer at the last. Hans-Georg Knoch, who would rather be called by his Polish name, Jurek, died only a few weeks after her, in June 2010.
For more than 10 years he has guided and participated to an important degree in all the activities of our Society as president of the Ärztliche Gesellschaft für Ozonanwendung in Prävention und Therapie
Born in the town of Oberglogau/Gogwek in Upper Silesia/Oberschlesien/Grny lsk on 19th Sept. 1931, he completed his medical studies in Posen/Pozna and training as specialized physician in Cosel/Kole. At 26, together with Kristin, his wife, and their son Andreas, he migrated to Greifswald, the famous university city in Eastern Germany.
In 1981 his portrait, an oil painting by Fritz Eisel (1929-2010), was proudly added to the portraits of other rectors in the Gallery of Honours at the Medical Academy in Dresden. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Medical Faculty of Wroclaw University (Breslau) in Poland in 1985.
At the Carl Gustav Carus Medical Academy in Dresden since 1962, he received his professorship in 1966 where, in 1976, he was called to the regular chair for surgery. As Rector of the Medical Academy from 1977 to 1983, Hans-Georg Knoch reassumed this office after reunification in 1990 and 1991 before moving to Bad Salzuflen (North Rhine Westphalia) as surgeon specialized in proctology at a private clinic
The fact that we were able to gain his support and enthusiasm for ozone research was a remarkable piece of luck. In fact, thanks to him, the first ozone studies in the field of proctology were already carried out in the 1980s. These convincingly established colitis as an indication for ozone, thus fixing application form, concentration and dosage which have in the meantime been adopted into our Societys Guidelines as standard.
We will not only miss his scientific discussions and invaluable advice, but also and especially our fruitful and constructive private talks with Kristin and Jurek Knoch. In many ways, he reflected German history of the 20th Century, a subject he was particularly fond of.
